Frequently asked questions
Understanding Plucky Works
What is Plucky Works?
Plucky Works is a set of tools for the work that happens around publishing stories. It helps newsrooms manage community submissions, event calendars, freelance assignments, and story sharing while continuing to publish through the CMS they already use.
What newsroom problems is Plucky Works designed to solve?
Plucky Works replaces scattered email threads, spreadsheets, and manual handoffs with organized workflows. Inbox structures community submissions, Calendar organizes events, Assignments coordinates freelance coverage, and Wire helps newsrooms share finished reporting and track its reach.
Does Plucky Works replace our CMS or website?
No. Your CMS remains the place where you publish and manage your website. Plucky Works complements it, so you can improve newsroom operations without migrating your site or changing how your audience reads your work.
Is Plucky Works for individual newsrooms, news collaboratives, or larger organizations?
Individual newsrooms can use the tools for their own operations. Collaboratives can share stories and measure their collective reach. Media groups, universities, and other organizations can coordinate work across many outlets.
Choosing the right tools
What do Inbox, Calendar, Assignments, and Wire each do?
Inbox collects press releases, events, letters, and other community submissions in structured formats. Calendar helps editors review events and publish calendars for print or digital use. Assignments manages freelance work from assignment through review and payment. Wire lets trusted newsrooms share and republish stories, photos, audio, and video.
How do the four tools work together?
The tools follow the work around a story. Inbox gathers information from the community. Calendar turns submitted events into publishable listings or coverage opportunities. Assignments helps editors turn those opportunities into reporting. Wire distributes finished work to other newsrooms. Each tool can also stand on its own.
Which Plucky Works tools are available now?
Wire is available now and is already used by newsrooms and collaboratives to share reporting. Inbox, Calendar, and Assignments are in early access with pilot newsrooms. You can book a demo to discuss joining the pilot and see which tools fit your operation.
Do we need to adopt the entire suite, or can we start with one tool?
You can start with the tool that addresses your most immediate need. Add other tools as your workflow grows or as they become useful to your team. You do not need to change every newsroom process at once.
Fitting Plucky Works into your operation
How does Plucky Works connect with our existing CMS and workflows?
Plucky Works is designed to work alongside any CMS. Wire can use your existing RSS feeds to bring stories into the sharing workflow. It can also help move shared stories into your CMS with their formatting, bylines, and media attached. We'll help determine the best setup for your existing tools and processes.
What does setup and staff onboarding involve?
Setup is designed to take days, not months. Plucky Works can help configure your account, connect participating newsrooms, and train staff. Collaboratives and larger organizations can invite outlets and teammates without manually creating every account.
Editorial control and support
How much control does our newsroom keep over submissions, publishing, and story sharing?
Your newsroom keeps editorial control. Editors decide which submissions to accept, edit, decline, or publish. Wire permissions determine who can access and share particular stories. Plucky Works organizes the workflow, but it does not make editorial decisions for you.
What support is available, and how do we get started?
Step-by-step documentation is available for teams that want to set up the tools themselves. Plucky Works also offers demonstrations, onboarding, training, and direct support for newsrooms, collaboratives, and larger organizations. A 30-minute demo is the quickest way to discuss your workflow and determine where Plucky Works fits.
